Link to our challenge slidedeck: BACKGROUND & FOCUS OF CLIMATE DATA HACK CHALLENGE

Challenge:

1) Design a tool to help SF residents understand how climate change will affect their health and the health of their neighbors in the next 10 years using data available here: http://www.sfclimatehealth.org/neighborhoods/ 2) Design a tool to help US residents understand how climate change will affect their health and the health of their neighbors in the next 10 years using data available here: http://catalog.data.gov/dataset?groups=climate5434&#topic=climate_navigation

The White House and the Data.Gov initiative partners, have curated, published, and open-sourced an unprecedented 531+ Climate Data sets -- ranging from US Hourly Precipitation Data to USGS Water-Quality Data to the Social Vulnerability Index (SoVI).

This global problem needs urgent citizen-devlopers/data scientist help - one way to accelerate is with these Climate Data Hackathon/ Competition(s).

We challenge YOU to tap these data sets and help illucidate ways to mitigate climate change (e.g. predicting impact, preparation for resilience, and help find slowing / reversing solutions)

WANT TO BE A CLIMATE DATA HACKER?

IF YOU.CLASS() IN:

Let's mitigate climate change effects - one hack at a time!

SPECIFIC EXAMPLE HACK (A STEPWISE APPROACH):

Find a climate change correlation for TICK POPULATION IN MARIN COUNTY, in and around the Bay Area (your model can then be applied Nation-Wide)

Then overlay this climate data on top of the tick population data (total tick population), to seee if a predictive model can made correlating (time, e.g. rainfall, & tick increase over time).

Putting this into a Maps API of your choice (google maps for iOS or Android), can allow people to download and share information to your fellow hikers or households in the affected areas.

Potential impact - an immediate need is solved to prevent the unknowing hiker when and where to be cautious on a hike, and potentially mitigate the risk applying instect repellant and post hike inspection of their legs for any unwanted passengers (i.e. ticks).

OTHER PROBLEMS YOU CAN HELP SOLVE...

Here is an excerpt from our partners at NASA and NOAA:

Areas of interest that may be particularly relevant to local cities could include:

  • Storm surge/coastal flooding: Develop solutions to predict, protect and restore coastlines, natural spaces and animal habitats due to flooding
  • Drought prediction and management: Use of data around trees dying in local cities, geological data, precipitation/reservoir data and water data from

  • PWECO2 emission reduction: Help cities be able to measure C02 emission reduction consistently to allow for an apples to apples comparison across cities.  Visualize how much less CO2 emission has resulted from changing fleet of city owned cars

  • Extreme weather: Respond to flooding, tropical storms, wildfires and extreme sudden weather events

  • Efficiency: Build technology to help citizens and organizations better understand smart meter data.  Map deforestation in correlation with pollution dataMap of land erosion versus water levelsFuel leak data vs. death of vegetation in the area

  • Farming subsidy vs. CO2 from cattle vs. death of vegetation

  • Trending of 100 year flood plains to see if it has gotten better worse and re classify the flood plains if necessary

  • The effect of increase construction on water pollution

  • Electricity usage year over year versus building footprint of city

  • Increase use of port vs. ocean acidification: Pesticide runoff vs. algae blooms.
